A free expungement workshop is taking place Saturday, June 2nd in Ypsilanti. 89.1 WEMU's Lisa Barry talks with Johnny Epps, the service manager of the Michigan Works Washtenaw Service Center, and with Herb Fluker, a career adviser for Michigan Works, about what impact the event can have on the lives of those who participate and the overall community.
The expungement fair is taking place June 2nd from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Michigan Works Southeast location at 304 Harriet Street in Ypsilanti. Several Washtenaw County organizations, including the sheriff's department, the prosecutor, and Washtenaw Literacy, are supporting the event intended to lead to jobs for people who may have committed a crime in the past.
The expungement process takes 2 to 3 months with the goal of finding jobs for people without their past history being part of their current record once they've gone through the thorough legal process.
