A federal investigation is underway to determine if Eastern Michigan University discriminated against female athletes.

Thefederal Office of Civil Rightsis conducting the investigation after two former female athletes filed a lawsuit against the university earlier this year.  The investigation will help determine whether or not female athletes were offered enough opportunities in order fulfill Title IX requirements.

In a statement, EMU said they wanted the court to grant them a motion to halt the lawsuit while the investigation takes place.  Eastern wants to avoid duplicative proceedings.

As part of a budget restructuring plan, EMU eliminated four of its sports teams in March.  Softball, men's swimming and diving, women's tennis, and wrestling were the teams that were cut ot save about $2.4 million.  Student athletes on those teams were allowed to keep scholarships that were originally offered to them by Eastern.
