The Eastern Michigan University Undergraduate Symposium, which showcases the incredible research projects of EMU's students, is just around the corner. WEMU's Patrick Campion hears about what to expect this year from the Symposium's assistant coordinator, Amy Bearinger, in this week's "Focus on EMU."
The Undergraduate Symposium is:
A collection of research or creative projects that may be:
- An outstanding research paper, independent study, lab research project, performance, design-based project, or honors thesis.
- Work may be by single or multiple authors (no more than four authors per presentation).
An opportunity for participating EMU students to share the results of their research and creative academic activities in a conference format:
- Oral presentations, whether single or multiple authors, are allotted 15 minutes to present during one of four sessions.
- Poster presentations are displayed during one of three sessions. Each poster session is 1 hour and 30 minutes.
- The Design Expo demonstrates the outcomes of design-based projects in an exhibit format. The projects on exhibit are open to the public 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The nomination process:
- Begins with faculty identifying students who have achieved exceptional levels of work.
- Involves the completion of an online nomination, including a <700 character abstract, begun by the student and supported by the faculty mentor.
- Continues with department/school support of completed nominations and the forwarding of these to the event's planning committee.
About Amy Bearinger
Amy Bearinger is an advocate for student-driven success and is committed to empowering students at Eastern Michigan University.
Beginning in 2005 as a graduate assistant for the Communication, Media and Theatre Arts department, Amy is now a full-time lecturer teaching a variety of communication courses. Striving to facilitate self-motivation within the classroom, Amy guides students to truly value communication knowledge, awareness and skill.
Amy also serves as the assistant coordinator for the Undergraduate Symposium. This role gives her the opportunity to connect students with faculty mentors and unique research opportunities.
A native Michigander, you can find Amy making the most of her free time at Detroit sporting events or up north enjoying the Great Lakes with family and friends.
