The Ann Arbor Independent Community Police Oversight Commission continues to operate during the COVID-19 crisis. Their focus has changed a bit during the pandemic.
The commission has been in contact with theAnn Arbor Police Chief to make sure officers are wearing masks and maintaining social distancing when possible, when interacting with civilians. Lisa Jackson is the chair of the commission and says they’re also asking the police department to disinfect handcuffs among other equipment.
"If you transport someone in a patrol car, even if you’re not transporting them to the Washtenaw County jail, that car needs to be disinfected before the next person gets in that patrol car."
The commission is taking complaints from residents who believe officers may be jeopardizing their health by not following safety guidelines. The number of complaints filed have not increased during the pandemic.
