Art & Soul: The Art Of Well Being - A Lesson To Learn From The Pandemic About Ourselves And Humanity

Brian O'Donnell

"Art and Soul" this week is about the art of well being.  WEMU's Lisa Barry talks with Dr. Brian O'Donnell, an Ann Arbor psychotherapist and a teacher of "The Pathwork."  He suggests our current global health crisis is an invitation to a greater life and a time for possible reflection on what we might learn from the experience.

Dr. O'Donnell shared a quote that said, "That what is your salvation appears as your undoing" when talking about the current global health crisis.  He is a psychotherapist who has been in practice for 45 years in Ann Arbor working with individuals, couples, groups, and organizations.

He suggests that people "surrender to feelings of discomfort right now," adding, "It's ok to not be ok" at this time.  He suggests that what is happening right now is an invitation to a greater life and we should take some time to ask "What is here to teach me?," instead of asking, “Why is this happening to me?”--as looking for someone to blame only prolongs the agony.

Dr. O'Donnell says we need to make room for grief and uncertainty and loss in a healthy way and says there's such a thing as “good grief,” as you hear in the common expression.  He believes if we really let ourselves feel our grief or our uncertainty or our fear, it will make us more whole.
