TheRide To Resume Collecting Fares
The Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority, also known as TheRide, will start collecting fares again on August 2nd.
TheRide stopped collecting fares in March to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Since then, they have lost about $3 million in fare revenue. Bryan Smith is the deputy CEO of operations for TheRide and says new safety elements have been installed on buses to make fare collection safe for drivers and passengers.
Bryan Smith: We have installed plexiglass shields that enclose the operators to provide a physical barrier, since physical distancing is impossible between them and the farebox.
Starting August 2nd, passengers will once again be allowed to board through the front door of the bus to pay their fare. For social distancing purposes, passengers have been using the back door.
