Environmental And Climate Groups Endorse City Of Ann Arbor's Affordable Housing Proposal

City of Ann Arbor

Six environmental and climate organizations in Washtenaw County have endorsed the City of Ann Arbor’s affordable housing proposal that voters will see on the November ballot.

If approved, Proposal C would generate about $6.5 million a year during the next 20 years to build about 1,500 affordable housing units.  Washtenaw Climate Reality, Sunrise Ann Arbor, and the Ecology Center are among the groups that support the 1-mill.  Ugochi Ndupu is the climate justice organizer for the Ecology Center.

Ugochi Ndupu: Twenty-two percent of carbon emissions in Ann Arbor come from commuting alone, and so it really shows the link of how commuting, due to an accessibility to affordable housing in Ann Arbor, really contributes to the greater problem of climate.

Ndupu says that if the proposal is approved, it will help the city achieve its community-wide, carbon neutrality goal by the year 2030.  The Ann Arbor 2030 District, Sierra Club Huron Valley Group, and the Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice are the other groups that endorsed Proposal C.
