Art and Soul with Lisa Barry

Second Thursdays 4:35pm every month

Art and Soul is a new feature on 89.1 WEMU that will focus on our vibrant visual arts community. 

Lisa Barry, host of WEMU's All Things Considered, will work with Omari Rush from the Ann Arbor Art Center to bring you stories about the art and artists that you can see, feel, touch and experience right in your own neighborhood.  Each segment will feature an in depth look at a particular event, installation, artist, etc. along with news and tidbits about what's happening in art around town.  In addition to regular airings on WEMU, Art and Soul will also be a regular web feature with dynamic content with pictures and videos that will help bring the art to life.

Summer is here and with it comes warm weather and plenty of chances to experience the performing arts outdoors.

On this week's on Art & Soul: The Performing Arts, Jenn and I are joined by the president of Ann Arbor's Penny Seats Theatre, Lauren London.

For 40 years Bob Quinn has been interested in change - Positive change.

He's a professor at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, the author of 18 books and one of the co-founders of the University of Michigan's Center for Positive Organizations.

This edition of Art and Soul focuses on comics and animation with special guests Jerzy and Anne Drozd.

Jerzy Drozd creates comics and is known as the "pied piper of children" at the Ann Arbor Art Center. He describes himself as a "person who writes with pictures" and says the youth comics market is a growing field right now.

On this week's Art and Soul, I talk with Jessica Webster about some of the things happening in and around Ann Arbor this month.

Taste of Ann Arbor is this coming Saturday, June 4th. It's a chance to sample food from a number of different Ann Arbor restaurants.

This is the first edition of the Art and Soul "performing arts" on 89.1 WEMU.

We join local arts and journalist blogger Jenn McKee to talk about the many performing arts activities going on in our community.

We are also joined by a special guest Eastern Michigan University professor and composer Ryan Lewis who wrote the music for "Irrational," a rock musical by David Wells about the Pythagorean cult and the discovery of irrational numbers.

This month on Art and Soul, we focus on the visual arts with Omari Rush, the Director of Community Education for the Ann Arbor Art Center:

There is an event coming up at the Ann Arbor Art center on March 23rd in which they will bring artists together and try to help them develop themselves as professionals by teaching them how to put their work and philosophy into writing. A  training session which will help artists learn about submitting proposals or getting people to understand their work better.

  It focuses on the rich and vibrant art scene available locally with information on what's happening now, soon and what's coming up around town.
  This week I spoke with Omari Rush from the Ann Arbor Art Center about a new outdoor art festival called Pop-X. It's an outdoor exhibition of art in downtown Ann Arbor's Liberty Plaza Park and it launches on October 15th.

It's a look at the visual arts experience in our community. We're going to focus on the rich and vibrant arts scene available locally because of our area's firm embrace of the arts and culture.  Omari Rush, Curator of Public Programs at Ann Arbor Art Center will guide us through some of the great new and wonderful artistic opportunities to be found around Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor.
