Issues of the Environment: Mayor Hieftje Talks Public Transit in SE Michigan

Among the most debated issues in Ann Arbor and the Southeast Michigan region, is the matter of public transportation. What should we be working towards, what should public transit of the future look like, what elements should it contain….and of course: how do we pay for it all?

These are questions debated on a regular basis at Ann Arbor City Council, and our guest this morning is in the middle of all of it. John Hieftje is the Mayor of Ann Arbor.

Our conversation on public transportation in the region continues throughout 2014 on WEMU News. Next week on Issues of the Environment our guest will be Susan Pollay. Susan is the Executive Director of the Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority and we'll discuss how the growing job sector is impacting development downtown, and how new development impacts the environment.

Nearly three-quarters of David Fair’s 20+ years in radio has been at WEMU. Since 1994, he has been on the air at 5am each weekday on 89.1 FM as the local host of NPR’s Morning Edition. Over the years, Fair has had the opportunity to interview nationally and internationally known politicians, activists and celebrities. But he feels the most important features and interviews have been with those who live and work here at home. He believes his professional passions and desires fit perfectly into WEMU’s commitment to serving a local audience.
