A Conversation With The Mother Of A Mich Med ER Nurse Who Says It's Hard Not To Worry...All The Time

Michigan Medicine
Cindy Lyon

With the coronavirus pandemic still not at its peak, local hospitals are doing the best they can to deal with all the cases.  But what is that like for those on the front line and their families?

WEMU's Lisa Barry talks to Cindy Lyon, the mother of 25 year-old Michigan Medicine ER nurse Christy Lyon, about their "new reality," now that she is working directly with patients infected or potentially infected with COVID-19.

Christy Lyon has been a Michigan Medicine nurse for two years.  The 25 year-old has been working 12-hour shifts dealing with patients, many infected with or potentially infected with COVID-19.  Her mother, Cindy Lyon, says she just "worries about her daughter all the time and prays she will be ok."

Cindy is making scrub caps for the hospital with her sewing machine in the basement of her home as a way to try and help out her daughter and her Michigan Medicine colleagues.  She says she sees first-hand the importance of staying home at a time like this to try and stop the spread of the virus that hasn't even peaked yet.

She says she and her family are quarantined, just like her daughter the nurse, and they will see each other only through a window right now but adds she calls every night after her shift.

Cindy says every single minute her daughter is working on the front lines as a Michigan Medicine ER nurse, she is thinking about and praying for her and everyone else in similar positions.
