COVID-19 May Impact Agreement Between Ann Arbor School District And Union Representing Teachers

Ann Arbor Education Association

TheAnn Arbor Education Association says they may have to extend a memorandum of agreement with Ann Arbor Public Schools if the district extends remote instruction with students because of the coronavirus pandemic.  89.1 WEMU's Jorge Avellan has the story.

The current agreement in place will expire on April 6th, but since Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a "stay home, stay safe" executive order, teachers may have to continue teaching students online.  Fred Klein is president of the teachers' union.

Fred Klein: If this school closure continues, since that's a change in working conditions, we would continue to work with the district to keep things as normal as possible for the students and to provide these kind of opportunities that teachers are doing right now.

On a separate but related issue, union members have approved a new salary and health benefit contract presented by the union leadership.  It's been sent to the school board for approval.
