Ann Arbor Mayor Says They'll Continue To Operate - Without Pause - As Best They Can During Pandemic

City of Ann Arbor

With a new executive order from Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to "stay home and stay safe," Ann Arbor's top elected official says he echoes that sentiment.

WEMU’s Lisa Barry spoke with Ann Arbor Mayor Christopher Taylor to see what the "new normal" is looking like in that city.

Mayor Taylor says they are doing their best to "operate without pause," despite the closing of several businesses, social distancing, and other impacts of the coronavirus.

He praises city workers and said whether it's doing their job remotely or on the front lines, they're doing a good job.

"People are dedicated to doing the job of government of doing the job of civil society, and it’s been impressive, and I’m so grateful for what they're doing," Taylor says.

The Ann Arbor mayor says the city council will still hold its public meetings during the ongoing health crisis but adds they're moving to online meetings, as soon as they get the necessary technology up and running.

“We need to stay safe and save lives.  People’s individual actions and individual commitment to being safe and staying home are going to make a nurse on her shift better off, a doctor on her rounds better off,” Taylor says.

Mayor Taylor adds essential city services like water, garbage pick-up, the fire department, and police will remain unaffected.
