EMU Gets Students Excited For Math With "Math Facts Challenge"

Eastern Michigan University

Eastern Michigan University is trying to get grade school students interested in mathematics.

The school is hosting its annual “Math Facts Challenge” on-campus Wednesday, May 29, as part of a larger effort to help students develop valuable, life-long skills. More than 200 students from across southeast Michigan are expected to participate this year. Malverne Winborne is the director of EMU’s Charter Schools Office and is helping to oversee the event.  He says it’s a great way to get students excited about math.

“I think it's important to have events like this or to sponsor events like this to instill the significance and importance of math in everyday life,” Winborne says.

Winborne says, and by hosting it at EMU, it also gives students a chance to see campus and get them interested in, and thinking about, college.
