Ari Weinzweig

Zingerman's

The co-founding partner of Ann Arbor'sZingerman's restaurants and community of businesses, Ari Weinzweig, is also a local thought leader and writer of many books and pamphlets.  His latest pamphlet is called "Working Through Hard Times: Life and Leadership Learnings from 2020."  WEMU's Lisa Barry talks with Weinzweig about why he wrote the pamphlet and what lessons are there to be learned both personally and professionally from what we've experienced from the COVID-19 pandemic so far.

Ari Weinzweig and Lisa Barry at the Roadhouse...one year ago and shortly before the pandemic changed everything!

Acknowledging 2020 was difficult for a myriad of reasons including a pandemic, Weinzweig reflects on the many lessons to be learned from the pain and hardship we all experienced. He writes, "This pamphlet is my silent, spoken word album, released to commemorate the exceptionally challenging year that 2020 has been," adding, "I believe that collaboration and kindness and caring for each other will help us overcome."

Lisa touched on some of those lessons, including:

  • Sticking with stuff through the zone of doubt and blame.
  • Thoughts on trying to get through to the other side.
  • Personal visioning in a pandemic.  Now is a terrific time to write your life story.
  • The power of picking up the phone.   Random regular calls can help us more effectively manage ourselves.

Weinzweig writes that he thinks of 2020 as a “marathon through a minefield.”
