Art & Soul: The Art Of Well Being - How Humility Helps Our Personal And Professional Lives

Ari Weinzweig

Zingerman's co-founder Ari Weinzweig has written several books and pamphlets in recent years about a variety of topics, mostly having to do with improving ourselves and our perspectives, which can lead to better relationships, whether personal or business-related.

WEMU's Lisa Barry talks to Weinzweig about his latest pamphlet called “Humility: A Humble, Anarchistic Inquiry.”

In his latest pamphlet, Ari Weinzweig says, "When we're humble, we're a lot more interested in other people's perspective.  When we're humble, we're more able to say we don't have answers.  When we're humble, it's important that we understand that we're not better than anybody else, or we're not worse than anybody else."  Weinzweig adds, "The ideas of systemic bias and all the issues around centuries of racism and exclusion of various groups, including beliefs that women can't be good leaders...all of those things honestly go away if we can stay in a place of humility."  He says, "We know by definition that we are not better than anyone else.  Everyone by definition has value, and everyone has something positive to contribute if we're willing to listen."

He says humility is good for leadership, business, and can enrich your overall personal life as well.

He mentions three important characteristics essential in "team players," including humility, the ability to work collaboratively, and to be hungry...driven to achieve positive things.  Weinzweig says, "Without humility, nothing great happens."

The pamphlet on humility can be purchased here.
