Washtenaw County Students Rally For Climate Action

Over 1,000 climate action rallies were held Friday around the world, including right here in Washtenaw County.  89.1 WEMU's Jorge Avellan attended one hosted by the Climate Action Movement at the University of Michigan and has the story.

"Climate Strike...Climate Strike."

Students walked out of class this morning demanding that immediate action needs to be taken to address concerns over climate change.  Matt Harmon says he took part in the rally because of information released by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

"Because, as the IPCC says, we basically have 11 years to start our transition to carbon neutrality if we want to make any impact on the state of our climate as it is," said Harmon.

Over 500 students and community members from across Washtenaw County took part in the rally at the University of Michigan Diag.  Rally organizer Logan Vear explains what needs to be done at the local level to address climate change.

"So institutions, such as the University of Michigan, doing things such as going completely renewable, going to carborn neutrality, committing to ensuring that there is enough education surrounding sustainability and surrounding climate change," said Vear.

Students plan to voice their concerns in the near future with Ann Arbor's city council.
