In December of 1965, WEMU first took to the airwaves, and it was quite a different station than the one you know today. The origin story is fascinating, and as we celebrate WEMU’s 60th anniversary, we’re going to take you back to the beginning. Dick Jacques helped start WEMU six decades ago and served as station manager for about nine years helping create the foundation for the station we are today. He reflects on the station's history with WEMU's David Fair.

2025 marks WEMU's 60th anniversary. Throughout the year, we will have a number of celebrations. And, of course, you will have the opportunity to join us for those events. Additionally, on all of our news and music programs, we are going to be having conversations with the people instrumental in helping shape the radio station you know today. The first is with Station Manager Emeritus, Art Timko. He joined WEMU's David Fair to discuss the station's humble beginnings and forging the path for what the station has become.
