Room And Board Rates At Eastern Michigan University To Increase By 4 Percent In The Fall

Eastern Michigan University is raising room and board rates by 4 percent for next school year.  The Board of Regents approved the hike Tuesday in efforts to cover increased maintenance and food costs.

Chair of the Board of Regents Francine Parker notes they made an important change to make on-campus apartment contracts unique for each individual rather than a group agreement.

According to Parker they are carefully balancing increases needed to cover maintenance, and food cost hikes with trying to remain as affordable as possible.

The standard 18-meal plan, double-occupancy room in central campus halls will be $8,941 for the 2014-2015 school year. Room and board rates are somewhat higher or lower elsewhere on campus, depending upon the facility. Per-student apartment rates range from $1,800 to $3,000 per semester and do not require a meal plan.

Parker’s pleased the residence hall and campus improvements in the last several years have driven occupancy rates to around 95 percent.  Over 3,900 students were living on campus last fall, the most at EMU since 2003.
