EMU Board Of Regents Approve Tuition Increases

89.1 WEMU's David Fair  reports on the budget and tuition action taken by the EMU Board of Regents.

  • The EMU Board of Regents approves a 312-million dollar budget for fiscal year 2015-2016, which begins  July 1st.
  • Tuition will go up 7.8 percent for in-state students. The increase amounts to about $25-dollars per credit hour increasing tuition by $754-dollars from the current tuition rate. Tuition will come to $10, 417 dollars for EMU students in  the academic year beginning this fall.
  • The 7.8 percent tuition hike is above the state cap of 3.2-percent and will cost EMU about one million dollars in performance  funding in its state appropriation.
  • The tuition increase will generate about $10-million dollars more in revenue than keeping to the state's 3.2-percent cap.
  • Over the past six fiscal years, EMU has kept tuition rates and increases below state average.
  • Despite the increase, EMU officials expect tuition to remain third lowest of the state's 15 public universities.
