Kevin Leeser filed and got approved for what's known as a "declaration of intent" of write-in candidacy. Leeser will run against candidate Chip Smith in Ann Arbor's 5th Ward city council general election in November.
The University of Michigan Hospital nurse originally tried registering as an independent candidate but didn't get enough valid signatures to do so before the 2015 primary elections held earlier this year.
Leeser believes that not enough people are running for city council. “I’m just trying to give people a choice. I think that’s the big thing. Having one person run for city council, to me, is not tolerable in this day and age,” Leeser said in an interview with WEMU news.
Chip Smith beat incumbent Mike Anglin in the primary election, and hasn't had a challenger until now.
No one else has registered as a write-in candidate.
