Black Lives Matter Discussion Part Of EMU's Martin Luther King Jr. Day Events

Jorge Avellan

As part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations at Eastern Michigan University, a seminar on Black Lives Matter protests was held.

Students discussed the impact that the Black Lives Matter campaign is having on society.  While they all agreed that racism still exists, many students like Bianca Parker say today's movement is not nearly as organized as the civil rights movement was.  She would like people to learn more about the issues affecting African-Americans before joining protests in the streets so they can contribute even more to the cause.  The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People moderated the discussion.

Other conversations that were held today included voting rights and the over incarceration of women in the United States.
