Rally Held In Ann Arbor On Anniverary Of Aura Rosser's Shooting

A few hundred protesters marched through downtown Ann Arbor on the one year anniversary of the shooting of Aura Rosser.

The activist group Ann Arbor to Ferguson organized the march and subsequent vigil to commemorate the death of Rosser, who was shot by an Ann Arbor police officer.

Rebecca Ahmad-Robinson is a student organizer with the group. She says those involved demand a strong civilian police review board.

Ahmad-Robinson says,

“[We're] asking for a civilian review board with teeth. We really need what happened to Aura Rosser not to happen again and not to blame mental illness as a blanket statement.”

Ann Arbor Mayor Christopher Taylor told WEMU that he supports the creation of a citizen police review board.

Taylor says,

"This is an important area.Iit is very important that residents have confidence in their police department and increased communication is one way to achieve that. I would expect [Ann Arbor] council members to be interested in moving forward.”

The state found the officers involved in Rosser's killing were justified, but last week the Ann Arbor Human Rights Commission endorsed the creation of a review board to improve police and community relations in the city.
