Increase In Homeless Shelter Usage Has Not Affected Shelter Budgets
Frigid temperatures during the last week caused more homeless people to use shelters in Washtenaw County.
Daily, shelters saw an increase of about 28 people. They usually help between fifty and sixty residents.
But LauraUrteaga- Fuentes, who is a human services policy specialist for Washtenaw County says the increase did not affect the county's shelter budget. She said they didn't end up using more resources because they had the appropriate amount of staff time available to accommodate the demand. Three local churches also helped by offering shelter to those in need.
Last year, the demand for shelters was higher. Centers took in about 80 people a day.
