The Great Lakes Science Centerin Ann Arbor could soon see a boost in funding.

Congress is considering a bill to streamline the center's funding process and give it $17.5 million each year for the next 10 years.

Russell Strach is the center's director.  He says the money would allow them to buy new equipment and improve their research capabilities.

"Devices that can travel around the lakes, gather samples, gather data without us actually being there at the same time. The capabilities of transmitting that information are things that we do with our cell phones today, but we don't yet have them deployed in the Great Lakes."

Strach says they could also start filling scientific and technical positions at the center that are currently vacant due to previous budget cuts.
