Flex Route on US-23 Expected To Open This Week

After a year of construction on US-23, the Flex Route projectbetween Ann Arbor and Brighton is expected to open this week.

That's the extra lane on the inside shoulder of the expressway that's being built to ease traffic congestion during rush hour and times of heavy traffic.  Cameras have been installed on the highway to monitor traffic and provide live traffic updates to drivers on digital signs.

Kari Arendis a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Transportation.

"Crews are focusing on doing the final paving along the corridor. That is resulting in the lengthier lane closure motorists are seeing out there. We also need to apply the final pavement markings and complete the testing of the Flex Route system, the overhead signs."

On a daily basis, about 66,000 vehicles go through the area where the Flex Route 23 project is underway.  $92 million of state and federal funding are being used for the project.
