The November general election is just over a week away, and there's still time to become more informed on what's on the ballot. More information on Ann Arbor's Proposal A and getting a last-minute, absentee ballot are just some of topics discussed in this week's "Civic Matters" with WEMU's David Fair and the CivCity Initiative's Mary Morgan.
Mary Morgan brings a wealth of experience to the airwaves. While heading up the CivCity Initiative now, Mary was previously co-founder and publisher of the Ann Arbor Chronicle. Prior to that, she served as a reporter and editor for the Ann Arbor News when it was a daily, print edition newspaper.
This Week's Topics:
• The Election Protection Coalition is seeking nonpartisan poll monitors to help residents navigate the voting process and understand their right to vote. Volunteers will receive training and must commit to taking at least one Election Day shift to stand outside of an assigned polling location. They will distribute “Know Your Rights” cards to voters, answer basic questions from voters at the polls, and help voters resolve any problems that occur, with the help of trained legal professionals. • You still have time to request an absentee ballot, if you qualify. In Ann Arbor, the city clerk's office will be open this Saturday, Nov. 3 from 8 a.m. til 2 p.m. Saturday is the deadline to request an absentee ballot application by mail for the Nov. 6 general election. Ann Arbor voters can request an absentee ballot application by calling the clerk’s office at 734-794-6140. The final deadline to apply for an absentee ballot in person is 4 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 5. • Still undecided about Prop A? There are several ways to learn about the controversial ballot proposal for Ann Arbor voters that, if approved, would designate a site known as the Library Lot for an urban park and civic center. Video is available of an Oct. 25 panel discussion about pros and cons of the proposal. And on Monday, Oct. 29 at 8 p.m., student groups are hosting "Affordability in Ann Arbor – A Students' Guide to Prop A." The event takes place at the UM Ford School, 735 S. State. Then on Thursday, Nov. 1, a forum about a proposed development on that site – The Collective on 5th – will take place from 5-7 p.m. at the Ann Arbor City Club, 1830 Washtenaw Ave. Click here for more info.
• In non-election news, Washtenaw County has openings on nearly 20 different advisory boards and commissions, and is seeking volunteers to serve in those positions. The deadline to apply is Nov. 19. Click here for details.
