January 21st is Martin Luther King Day, an annual federal American holiday that celebrates the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.  It is intended to celebrate the life and achievements of the influential American civil rights leader.

At Eastern Michigan University, nearly a week of activities are planned, including a keynote address by Keith Boykin, New York Times bestselling author and TV's leading commentator on politics, race, and sexual orientation.  89.1 WEMU's Lisa Barry spoke to Boykin about the current state of politics and his upcoming address at EMU.

Boykin, who worked for the Clinton administration at the White House, says they had their share of problems but says it does not compare to what he sees as a lot of chaos and controversy happening now with the current administration.

Boykin says he looks forward to giving a MLK address at EMU, because he sees young people as the future of our country.  He says he believes, as a country, we should make it a priority to help support them in achieving their dreams.  He says he will be sharing a message of unity, love, peace, and social justice when he speaks at Eastern much like what Martin Luther King, Jr. himself shared when he addressed the nation 50 years ago.
