Art & Soul: The Art Of Well Being - The Benefits Of Self-Compassion & Being On Your Own Side

Ann Arbor Center for Mindfulness

This week, "Art and Soul" is about the art of well being.  WEMU’s Lisa Barry talks with a pioneer in the scientific development of self-compassion, Kristen Neff.  Neff and Christopher Germer will be participating in an upcoming, two-day workshop hosted by the Ann Arbor Center for Mindfulness, November 8th and 9th.

Neff says self-compassion is an incredible source of strength, coping, and resilience as everyone faces struggles in life.  She says it's important to be your own ally and care for own well being as well as others.  Neff says self-compassion is a kind, warm, supportive stance towards oneself that people need to give themselves permission to embrace.

She and Germer will be sharing mindful self-compassion core skills during their upcoming, two-day workshop in Ann Arbor.  She says self-compassion can be learned by anyone, even those who didn't receive enough affection in childhood, or who find it embarrassing to be kind to oneself.
