EMU Today

Now that sales of recreational marijuana have begun in Michigan, the Eastern Michigan University Cannabis Education Coalition is hosting a special event December 5th intended to help clear up some of the confusion about what happens next.

WEMU's Lisa Barry spoke with Nicholas Pomante and Sean Woolfe from EMU's Student Wellness Department to find out what participants can expect from the free event open to the community.

YPSILANTI – On Thursday, Dec. 5, the Eastern Michigan University Cannabis Education Coalition will host a panel event titled “Let’s Be Blunt About Marijuana Legalization,” which will focus on the marijuana law, risks, benefits and side effects.  The event will take place from 6-8 p.m. in the EMU Student Center Auditorium, located at 900 Oakwood Street in Ypsilanti.

The panel will be comprised of Senator Jeff Irwin, who introduced legislation to expunge low-level marijuana-related offenses from criminal records, Dr. Kevin Boehnke from the Department of Anesthesiology and the Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Center at University of Michigan; and Community Relations Officer Tim Siecinski from EMU’s Department of Public Safety.

The Cannabis Education Coalition takes a preventative, collaborative approach to addressing public health and is made up of EMU’s Office of Wellness and Community Responsibility, the Office of Health Promotion, Housing and Residence Life and the Department of Public Safety.

The mission of the Cannabis Education Coalition is to educate the community about the new cannabis laws as well as risks, benefits and side-effects of cannabis use.  Its health promotion efforts focus on three key areas:

  1. Informed Decision Making (knowing the law and campus policies).
  2. Harm Reduction Strategies (for those who choose to use).
  3. Social Norming and Abstinence (to reinforce abstinence for those who choose to abstain).
