Protest Held In Ypsilanti Township To Stop Evictions During COVID-19

WikiHow

The Washtenaw General Defense Committee held a protest on Wednesday in Ypsilanti Township in an effort to try to stop evictions during COVID-19.

The protest was held outside the 14B District Court, where at least 49 eviction cases are expected to be heard this week.  The Washtenaw General Defense Committee is asking the State of Michigan to extend an eviction moratorium that was lifted this summer.  Max Benson is an organizer for the committee that defends the rights of working-class residents.

Max Benson: So many people, who haven’t had pay for the last few months, have fallen behind on rent. You’re going to have people who are going to be kicked out of their homes, and we may see the potential for the homeless community growing.

Benson says the next step is to reach out to residents who are facing evictions to inform them about rights they have as tenants.
