The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County says the demand for shelter has increased during the coronavirus pandemic.
The shelter association is currently providing overnight accommodations to 150 men and women. That’s an increase from the 130 they served a month ago. Dan Kelly is the executive director of the association and says he’s keeping a close eye on the state’s home eviction moratorium; he thinks the number could go higher when that happens.
Dan Kelly: The potential effect of when that’s lifted, whether or not we’ll have more people that find themselves on the street.
Kelly says they’ve had to hire 30 new temporary employees to help monitor guests staying at a local hotel and a church due to overcrowding at the shelter. The shelter has not had any new positive coronavirus cases since it reported two a couple of months ago.
