This week is Mental Health Awareness Week, part of a month devoted to raising awareness of the struggles that impact most people from time to time.

WEMU's Lisa Barry talks with University of Michigan professor of psychology and psychiatry and the creator of "Mood Lifters" Dr. Patricia Deldin, who talks about the issues people are dealing with which are magnified by our global health crisis.

One in four women and one in seven or eight men at some time in their lives deal with depression or anxiety.  Bringing attention to those struggles is one of the reasons Mental Health Awareness Month is observed each year.  Dr. Patricia Deldin created "Mood Lifters" as a way to offer help where you learn ways to lead a life full of pleasure and joy and less depression and anxiety.  The program is designed for people who are struggling but don't think they need professional help.

Dr. Deldin says there are biological and psychological and social causes and consequences of mental illness and there are many different coping skills people can learn to feel better and improve their relationships.  Relationships, she says, are very critical for mental wellness.
