Some U-M Faculty Protest Back-To-School Plan, Ask For Online-Only Learning Due To Pandemic

There have been protests for several days this week outside the University of Michigan Administration Building by a group of faculty members, who say they have "no confidence" in the university's plan for some in-person learning this fall.  Professor Kentaro Toyama talks with WEMU's Lisa Barry about organizing the protests and shares their concerns about health and safely teaching U-M students in person during a pandemic.

Toyama says the faculty, staff, and students of the university are not convinced that the administration is doing the most it can to protect the health of the Ann Arbor community.  They have circulated their own petitions internally, with no meaningful response from the administration.

He says, while they are resigned to a campus re-opening (many students are already there), they believe, given that decision, that the university must do much more to ensure their collective safety.  He says they have received very little response from the administration so far to their concerns and are deciding what their next step should be.
