Black Lives Matter Protests To Be Held This Weekend In Ann Arbor

Tariq Speights

At least two protests will take place this weekend in Washtenaw County after Jacob Blake, an African-American man, was shot seven times by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin last Sunday.

Editor's Note: Since this story aired, it was determined that Sunday's protest will take place at the University of Michigan diag.

Survivors Speak is hosting the first protest at 11 am on Saturday at the University of Michigan’s diag.  Organizers say their goal is to inform participants on how to contact their local elected officials to address Black Lives Matter issues in their communities.  The second protest will take place on Sunday at noon, also in Ann Arbor, and it’s being organized by University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University student-athletes.  EMU Linebacker Tariq Speights is one of the organizers.

Tariq Speights: For a good portion of us coming out there, we’re black student-athletes, and outside out of courts and stuff like that, the world still doesn’t see us as equals in some parts. And so, we’re fighting for equality, we’re fighting for justice.

The exact location of the protest on Sunday is still being determined but organizers are planning to gather on South University Avenue near the diag.
