Hundreds of essential workers are receiving elemental tuition aid at Washtenaw Community College, thanks to a state scholarship program. Here’s more from WEMU’s Heather Irvine.
Students receiving tuition-free access to WCC this semester fulfill a key requirement: last spring, they were frontline workers.
WCC’s Financial Aid Director Lori Trapp says the state’s scholarship programs recognize the value of the commitment of these students during a unique time.
“The Futures for Frontliners is a state of Michigan scholarship program that recognizes individuals who worked on the frontlines during the state shutdown.”
Students may be eligible for financial assistance through other programs, but if economic conditions shift, they can still receive aid for classes.
“Even if you had your tuition paid for by something else, you still are considered a frontliner student, and it could become important if your financial situation would change.”
Scholarships are for a skills certificate or associate degree at local community colleges.
