Vaping cannabis is associated with more symptoms of lung damage than vaping or smoking nicotine.  WEMU's Heather Irvine has more.

new University of Michigan study challenges assumptions of what type of smoking and what substances are most harmful to the lungs.

Dr. Carol Boyd, the study's principal investigator, strongly asserts that cigarettes and e-cigarettes are unhealthy for lungs, but vaping marijuana is even worse.

"Smoking cigarettes, vaping nicotine is associated with respiratory problem. However, the vaping cannabis had more respiratory problems and higher odds of having them."

The study shows adolescents who vape cannabis have double the odds of having symptoms, such as wheezing or trouble speaking and confirms deep concerns regarding adolescents compromising their respiratory systems during a pandemic.

Future research will focus on how young people move from one product to another and the trajectory of their symptoms.
