Cinema Chat: 'Truth', 'Experimenter', 'Our Brand Is Crisis', 'Burnt' And More

Truth

The newsroom drama "Truth" details the 2004 CBS 60 Minutes report investigating then-President George W. Bush's military service, and the subsequent firestorm of criticism that cost anchor Dan Rather (Robert Redford) and producer Mary Mapes (CateBlanchett) their careers.  "Truth" opens Friday at the State. 

Experimenter

"Experimenter" follows social psychologist Stanley Milgram (Peter Sarsgaard), who in 1961 conducted "obedience experiments" at Yale University. "Experimenter" invites us inside Milgram's whirring mind, beginning with his obedience research and wending a path to uncover how inner obsessions and the times in which he lived shaped a parade of human behavior inquiries. "Experimenter" opens Friday at the State.

Meet the Patels

“Meet the Patels” is a laugh-out-loud real life romantic comedy about Ravi Patel, an almost-30-year-old Indian-American who enters a love triangle between the woman of his dreams...and his parents. This hilarious and heartwarming documentary reveals how love is a family affair.   Winner of the Audience Award at the Traverse City Film Festival, “Meet the Patels” is currently at the State and moves to the Michigan on Saturday.

Goodnight Mommy

In “Goodnight Mommy,” during the heat of summer, nine year old twin brothers await their mother’s return.  When she comes home, bandaged after cosmetic surgery, nothing is like before and the children start to doubt whether this woman is actually who she says she is.  “Goodnight Mommy” opens Friday at the State.

Grandma

In “Grandma,” Lily Tomlin’s character has a granddaughter, Sage (Julia Garner), who unexpectedly shows up needing $500 before sundown. With the clock ticking, the two set out in her vintage Dodge on a controversial odyssey. Also stars Sam Elliott.

Rocks In My Pockets

"Rocks In My Pockets" is based on true events involving five women of director SigneBaumane's family, including herself, and their battles with depression and suicide. The animated film is packed with visual metaphors, surreal images and a twisted sense of humor. “Rocks in My Pockets” plays Thursday, October 29.  Director SigneBaumane will participate in a Q&A following the screening.

The Second Mother

In “The Second Mother,” when the estranged daughter of a hard-working live-in housekeeper suddenly appears, the unspoken class barriers that exist within the home are thrown into disarray. Brazil’s official submission to the 2016 Oscars as Best Foreign Language Film, “The Second Mother” plays Thursday at the Michigan.  

Lincoln

The Spielberg: Man and Monsters film series continues with “Lincoln," a revealing drama that focuses on the 16th President’s tumultuous final months in office. In a nation divided by war and the strong winds of change, Lincoln (Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis) pursues a course of action designed to end the war, unite the country and abolish slavery.  "Lincoln" plays Monday at 7 PM.

The U-M Center for Chinese Studies presents:  Also Like Life: The Films of Hou Hsiao-Hsien

The retrospective begins this week with "Dust in the Wind" on Tuesday and "A Time to Live and a Time to Die" on Wednesday.

Hairspray

Director John Waters chooses the TV dance show craze of the early '60s for his playful focus in "Hairspray." A "pleasantly plump" teenager (Ricki Lake) teaches 1962 Baltimore a thing or two about integration after landing a spot on a local TV dance show. “Hairspray” playsWednesday at the State.

Sacred Bush

The LusophoneFilm Festival(a celebration of Portuguese language films) continues with "Sacred Bush," which explores the lives and rituals of Guinea-Bissau islanders as they face up to the threat of drug traffickers in their midst. "Sacred Bush" plays Thursday November 5 at 7 PM at the State Theatre.

Our Brand Is Crisis

In "Our Brand is Crisis," a failing Bolivian presidential candidate enlists the firepower of an elite American management team, led by the damaged but brilliant “Calamity” Jane Bodine (Sandra Bullock). In self-imposed retirement following a scandal that earned her nickname, Jane is coaxed back into the game for the chance to beat her professional nemesis, the loathsome Pat Candy (Billy Bob Thornton), now coaching the opposition.  “Our Brand is Crisis” reveals the cynical machinations and private battles of world-class political consultants for whom nothing is sacred and winning is all that matters.  "Our Brand is Crisis" opens Friday.

Burnt

In "Burnt," Chef Adam (Bradley Cooper) had it all - and lost it. A two-star Michelin rockstar with the bad habits to match, he'll need the best of the best on his side to land his own kitchen and that third elusive Michelin star.  "Burnt" opens Friday.

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse

In "Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse," three scouts, on the eve of their last camp-out, discover the true meaning of friendship when they attempt to save their town from a zombie outbreak.  "Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse" opens Friday.
