As Concerns About the Pall/Gelman Plume Linger, Rep. Jeff Irwin Pushes House Bill to Require the MDEQ to Align Contaminate Clean-up Standards with EPA Standards
Overview

  • The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is vowing to revise the state standards for cleaning up dioxane pollution in 2014.
  • Irwin has introduced House Bill 5171, which would require the DEQ to develop cleanup criteria based on the EPA's recommended standards, require the DEQ to update its numbers more regularly, and protect public health when certain contaminants such as dioxane are found to be more harmful than previously thought; it also would remove unnecessary burdens on businesses that might be held to outdated cleanup standards for chemicals now found to be less harmful.
  • Rep. Jeff Irwin, state representative for the 53rd District, has long supported measures that would tighten the responsibility of Pall/Gelman in remediating contamination of groundwater in Scio Township.
