A Grassroots Organization Vows To Fight On To Prevent Oil Drilling Despite Court Loss

Residents of Scio Township are somewhat divided about drilling for oil in their neighborhoods.

Some seek to sell mineral rights to their properties. Others strongly oppose drilling and fear unforeseen environmental and economic consequences.

The grassroots group, Citizens for Oil-free Backyards, filed a motion to halt Traverse City-based West Bay Exploration Company from drilling a first exploratory well.

Washtenaw County Circuit Court Judge David Swartz, denied the motion.

Citizens for Oil-Free Backyards will continue to seek legal and legislative solutions.
