The ACLU of Michigan sent a letter to Washtenaw County Prosecutor Brian Mackie encouraging him not to press charges against Sha'Teina Grady El.
Grady El is the African-American woman who was punched by a white Washtenaw County sheriff’s deputy last week as he arrested her for refusing to leave a crime scene area in Ypsilanti Township. Mark Fancher is an attorney with the ACLU of Michigan.
Mark Fancher: It would not be in the best interest of society to have charges placed against a woman who endured that type of beating from a police officer.
Fancher says pressing charges would not help improve the relationship between the black community and police. The Washtenaw County prosecutor responded to the letter by informing the ACLU of Michigan that theState Attorney General’s Office is now handling the case.
