Residents Demand Justice After Washtenaw County Sheriff's Deputy Caught On Camera Punching A Woman

Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office

A second protest was held Wednesday afternoon at the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office after a white deputy was caught on camera punching a black woman as he arrested her.  The first was held Tuesday at the same location.

The sheriff’s deputy has been placed on administrative leave after the incident took place Tuesday in Ypsilanti Township.  The community group Survivors Speak helped organize the protest and is demanding that the sheriff’s office release the name of the deputy, apologize for what happened, and reevaluate how their officers are trained.  Trische Duckworth is the executive director of Survivors Speak.

Trische Duckworth: Do an extensive, extensive, extensive de-escalation training in which I hope that they would allow survivors to speak, to come in, and give that training.

In a statement, the sheriff’s office said an altercation ensued between deputies and two residents after those individuals refused to leave a crime scene area.  An internal investigation is being conducted.
