EMU President Says Student Enrollment Is A Top Priority

Eastern Michigan University President James Smith delivered his second State of the University address on Tuesday.  89.1 WEMU's Jorge Avellan attended and has the story.

President Smith made it clear that increasing student enrollment is a top priority for Eastern.  They hope to achieve that by advertising to teens on digital platforms.

President James Smith: It's targeted toward 16, 17 and 18 year olds. Things like Pandora and Spotify that we use to advertise either programs or areas of distinction.

Among those listening to President Smith in the crowd was Judy Kullberg--she's the president for Eastern's American Association of University Professors.  Kullberg says she liked how positive the speech was on moving the university forward, but that it was missing something.

Judy Kullberg: I would have liked to have heard some more specific aspects of the plan, especially regarding enrollment. I think at this point we're still not really hearing anything about how we are going to turn around this decline.

President Smith also announced the university plans to commit $250,000 next year to support campus initiatives, such as research and student retention.
