As an elected official and a cardiovascular ICU nurse at Michigan Medicine, Katie Scott, who represents District 9 as a Washtenaw County commissioner, has experienced quite a bit over this past year in a pandemic.

She talks with WEMU's Lisa Barry about that and her decision to write a public letter addressing recent comments shared by an Ann Arbor city council member, which contained a quote attacking journalists and included a homophobic slur.

As a Washtenaw County commissioner and Michigan Medicine ICU nurse, Katie Scott had already been speaking out about pandemic protocols as the number of COVID cases in the state have been rising.

She has also publicly and personally addressed recent comments by an Ann Arbor city council member containing a homophobic slur.

As a self-described “out elected official,” Katie Scott said she felt a need to write a letter addressing a comment posted on social media by council member Jeff Hayner.  The comment was a quote from a book but maligned journalists using a homophobic slur.  Hayner has since apologized, and the Washtenaw County commissioner said she was happy to see that, adding, however, she would like to see him "do some work to show that there is action behind his words."

Scott said she wanted to make the point that the comment was unacceptable and let people know that, in Washtenaw County, that is not the way people feel about the LGBTQ community.
