Washtenaw County Board Of Commissioners Responds To Controversial Ypsilanti Township Arrest

Jun 1, 2020

The Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners is discussing actions it might take after a Washtenaw County sheriff’s deputy punched a woman as he arrested her last week in Ypsilanti Township.

Commissioner Ricky Jefferson says the board will look into the possibility of adding new policies that would create more oversight at the sheriff’s office.  He says taking a closer look at the officers who are hired to serve and protect will also be essential.

Commissioner Ricky Jefferson: There’s a process of evaluation phycological and physical when deputies are hired.  Maybe we need to look more at how that process is conducted and evaluations are determined out as these officers are fit for service.

Jefferson says the board does not have a timeline of when they want to implement new measures, but that they want to work as quickly as possible to address the issue, sooner rather than later.
