The Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners has approved hazard pay for some of the county’s first responders as a result of COVID-19.
It’s part of an agreement with the “Police Officers Association of Michigan” that includes Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office deputies and corrections officers. The employees will receive a total pay increase of 4% during the year, which will be retroactive from the start of the year. Commissioner Andy LaBarre supports the increase.
"There needs to be in there, and there should be a recognition, that is work above and beyond sort of the standard challenges that work at the county presents."
The agreement will benefit nearly 230 employees. LaBarre says county general funds will be used to cover the hazard pay.
