Bill Manns' initial career plan was to become a doctor.  While working toward that goal, he recognized health administration was the better path to make the differences in health care services he thought necessary.  Now, Manns is president of the St. Joseph Mercy Health Systems hospitals in Ann Arbor and Livingston.  Manns shares his journey and discusses the future of health care in our community on this week’s "Washtenaw United."

WEMU has partnered with the United Way of Washtenaw Countyto explore the people, organizations, and institutions creating opportunity and equity in our area.  And, as part of this ongoing series, you’ll also hear from the people benefiting and growing from the investments being made in the areas of our community where there are gaps in available services.  It is a community voice.  It is 'Washtenaw United.'

UWWC STATEMENT ON TOPIC:

United Way of Washtenaw County partners with Saint Joseph Mercy Healy Ann Arbor & Livingston most notably through our award-winning and innovative funding collaborative, called Washtenaw Coordinated Funders.  Saint Joe’s joined the collaborative in 2016 by initially committing $250,000 annually to the collaborative to fund programs that address the social determinants of health.

Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) are the conditions in the places where people live, learn, work, and play affect a wide range of health risks and outcomes.  We recognize that these social determinants of health are integral to a thriving community, but we also recognize that the data reflects that not ALL Washtenaw County residents have the same access to healthy conditions.

This focus on social determinants of health and equity is aligned with United Way’s own priorities, as most of our own investments are also addressing social determinants of health-education, health care access, nutrition, housing, older adult support, and financial stability.

Saint Joe’s came to the table as the seventh funder in the funding collaborative, recognizing this strong alignment in goals between all the funders.

Saint Joe’s has been an invaluable partner as they bring expertise around social determinants of health and a strong commitment to equity.

Since joining the partnership, Saint Joe’s has invested $825,000 through the Washtenaw Coordinated Funders Partnership.
