The Washtenaw Intermediate School District says state and federal funding would be necessary if students are required to get tested for COVID-19 in the future.
Currently, students are not required to get tested for COVID-19 if they participate in in-person instruction at school. Ashley Kryscynski is a spokesperson for WISD and says districts simply don’t have the resources to offer the testing, and many testing providers are reluctant to test individuals under 18 years of age who are asymptomatic due to a limited number of tests available. She adds that if school testing does take place in the future, the process may not be the same for everybody.
Ashley Kryscynski: We understand that every district looks very different across Washtenaw County, we have incredibly diverse districts ranging from really small ones to really large ones. And so, we expect those to be district by district decisions.
Saline Area Schools confirmed this week that an individual at their district tested positive for COVID-19. It’s unknown if that person is a student or staff member.
