Ypsilanti City Council To Appoint New Council Member Tonight

City of Ypsilanti

Ypsilanti’s City Council will appoint a new council member Tuesday nightto fill a vacancy in Ward 1.

Toi Dennis, Lawrence Wartley Jr., and Brian Jones-Chance are the three residents who applied to be considered for the Ward 1 vacancy.  They were interviewed last week by council, and by city charter, council has to appoint a candidate by August 18th.  City Council Member Steve Wilcoxen from the second ward says the current term for Ward 1 expires in November of this year.

Council Member Steve Wilcoxen: The hope for any position, especially for this is that the people applying have been paying attention to what’s going on and they’re ready to jump in and do that.

The new member will replace Mayor Lois Richardson, who became mayor when former Mayor Beth Bashert resigned from office in June after making racist comments.
