#OTGYpsi: Ypsilanti District Library presenting a plethora of summer activities and community assistance
The Ypsilanti District Library (YDL) is making summer more accessible, educational, and fun for everyone in the community. The library's eighth annual Summer Challenge, where readers of all ages earn badges for prizes, to free meals, mutual aid programs, and teen-led music showcases, offers a full slate of free programming. Lee Van Roth (formerly Rylee Barnsdale) will share more about the program and others being offered in a conversation with YDL Community Relations Coordinator, Sam Killian.

Housing and food insecurity continue to grow in Washtenaw County, and the organizations that assist people through the difficult times are facing some challenges of their own right now. Rhonda Weathers is the executive director of SOS Community Services. She joined WEMU's David Fair to discuss the role SOS Community Services has played in its 55 years in the area.

Washtenaw United: Improving access to quality health care for those with sickle cell disease
Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that primarily affects Black and Hispanic people. There are significant gaps in access to high-quality health care for people who live with the disease. Dr. Sarah Reeves is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology at the University of Michigan. She focuses her research on ways to improve access to quality health care for those living with sickle cell disease. Reeves discussed her work with WEMU's David Fair.

1st Friday Focus on the Environment: Next Michigan House Minority Leader looks at green priorities in lame duck and next Legislative session
When the newly elected are sworn into office in January, the Michigan House of Representatives will have Republicans in the majority. The GOP took back control of the House in November while Democrats retain control of the Senate and Governor’s office. The Democratic Caucus has chosen State Representative Ranjeev Puri to serve as House Minority Leader in the new session. In the meantime, there is a lame duck session to finish up. WEMU's David Fair and Michigan League of Conservation Voters executive director Lisa Wozniak were joined by Representative Puri to look at environmental policy and governance.

Washtenaw United: United Way for Southeastern Michigan one of many nonprofits ready to offer utility assistance this winter
You may have noticed that the weather is getting colder, and there are a good number of people in Washtenaw County struggling to pay heating bills. Michigan residents have long relied on the Michigan Energy Assistance Program (MEAP) for utility bill assistance. MEAP provides funds to help low-income households afford energy costs and avoid harmful shutoffs, but many of the working poor can’t qualify. But there are efforts to change that in the state Legislature. Charles English from the United Way for Southeastern Michigan joined WEMU's David Fair to discuss all of that.
