EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM EDT FRIDAY
The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning, to be in effect until 8pm Friday. This warning replaces the earlier heat advisory. That is no longer in effect.
High humidity and temperatures in the mid 90s this afternoon will result in a heat index around 105-degrees. There will be little overnight relief with humidity persisting and lows only dropping into the upper 70s. Conditions will continue through tomorrow with highs in the low to mid 90s and a heat index of up to 105 degrees.
IMPACTS
Exposure to this kind of heat can result in heat stroke, heat exhaustion and other heat related illnesses. This is particularly true if you work outdoors or spend a significant amount of time outside, as is often the case with the Ann Arbor Art Fairs. Additionally, the cumulative effects of high daytime heat levels and warm overnight temperatures can take a toll on the health of people living in areas without air conditioning.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS
If you work outdoors or at going to be outside for extended periods of time, take extra precautions. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing, and drink plenty of water.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency - call 911.
